White Cane Awareness: On May 29, 2013 the Lions Club hosted a White Cane Awareness session at the Antrim Town Hall in Antrim, NH. Lion Linda Piekarski, President of the Monadnock Lions Club and Chair of the Dog Sight Project, and her guide dog Ruby, presented a demonstration and history of the White Cane. The White Cane is one of the skills a person with a vision handicap needs before becoming part of a guide dog team and to be an independent cane traveler.
We also allowed attendees to see what it means to walk with a White Cane. Lion Bruce Trivellini from the Henniker Lions Club provided hands-on activity for several attendees to walk with a white cane, while wearing a blindfold, through an obstacle course.
